Africa The political situation in Africa is extremely diverse and complex and democracy still often remains a dream. In North Africa, tensions between the two Libyan administrations escalated in early 2019 into a war among the forces of Serraj government and those of General Haftar, involving the lives of thousands of migrants and refugees. In Egypt, the authoritarian drift continued, and independent media are now silenced while laws on demonstrations make it impossible to publicly express dissent. The year 2019 saw massive demonstrations that brought the end of long presidencies in Algeria and Sudan producing political upheavals and massacres by paramilitary militias. If the situation in Mediterranean Africa seems complex, the situation in Sub-Saharan Africa is no less so. In the latter, armed groups have continued to sow terror in Nigeria where, for the tenth consecutive year, Boko Haram has carried out almost daily attacks, kidnappings, pillaging of villages and mass killings. In Mali, hundreds of people died in inter-ethnic clashes; while in Cameroon, separatist groups in the Anglophone regions continued their actions. In addition, Somalia sees continued actions from al-Shabab armed group. Africa sees major challenges ahead and climate change is another crucial problem. For instance, two consecutive cyclones have devastated South-East Africa, mainly affecting Mozambique and causing hundreds of casualties. The violence of these phenomena and the scarcity of available resources made it difficult to provide relief to local populations. However, it should be noted an increasing hope in some countries for progress in terms of respect for human rights. These are just a few flashes concerning Africa. You can investigate Africa and its challenges through our country fact sheets and in-depth articles.

Uganda: Safe Haven or Dust Under the Rug? We discuss this with Maëlle Noir

We often hear about the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as in South Sudan, or the continuing violence and reprisals in the Central African Republic. However, we know very little about the people fleeing these conflicts, the refugees, their conditions, and especially about the plight of women fleeing to save both their lives and their families. This is why today we would like to emphasise a part that is often overlooked in conflict narratives: the people who are

Somali piracy

Somali piracy is often described solely and exclusively as criminal, but what if it has also another function, namely that of guardians of the sea? In this article, an attempt will be made to investigate the nature of the phenomenon, even if there are still few sources that show an alternative vision to the internationally diffused one. Therefore, we will try to identify the elements which define piracy not only as a criminal act, but also as an alternative water

Oil spills in the Niger Delta: environmental and health disasters in Nigeria

The Niger Delta is one of the five most polluted ecosystems in the world due to oil spills that still affect both the environment and local populations, such as the Ikebiri and Ogoni. The oil industry, historically in a country like Nigeria, is the main cause of violent conflicts, environmental disasters and health disasters that are now structural. Moreover, this issue is also of interest to Italy since the civil trial at the Court of Milan involving ENI, with its

Talibè children in Senegal: life in the balance between abuse and begging

Dustiness, dirtiness, and barefoot children, most of them Talibè, holding empty tomato cans or plastic bowls in their hands populate the streets of Dakar and in many other cities in Senegal. Climate migration in Africa: an overview of the phenomenon

Climate and environmental migrations are a phenomenon discussed at the various environmental forums. However, each context brings with it differences in causes and consequences. In the meantime, a response on both fronts is becoming gradually urgent, while at the international level there are increasing difficulties in reaching agreement. Environmental and climate migrations Climate migration in Africa is an increasingly central topic in migration debate. As early as 1990, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations’ scientific forum
